The Glow-Up Is Not the Point

A paid bill. In your name. That is the sexiest piece of paper you will ever hold.

On revenge bodies, new bangs, and the much less photogenic things that actually mean you made it

There is a format on the internet right now. Slide one: a woman, crying, in a car, with no makeup and a messy bun. Slide two, six months later: same woman, blowout, new body, red dress, champagne, a caption that says "he'll regret this."

The post-divorce glow-up. Everyone loves it. I have liked about 400 of them.

And I want to be clear, if you got the blowout and the red dress, wear it. You earned it. I'll bring the champagne.

But I need to say the quiet part out loud. The glow-up is not the point. The glow-up is for him. Or for them. Or for the strangers in the comments. The glow-up is still a performance for an audience that does not live in your house.

The real wins do not photograph well.

When my divorce was finalized, my "glow-up" moment was not a dress. It was a question. Years earlier, a coworker at a startup told me she skipped resolutions and picked one word to shape her whole year. So I asked myself: what word should shape this next chapter? Nobody saw it happen. It got zero likes. It looked like a woman thinking. That was the whole victory, and it eventually became the name of this whole thing.

So here is the anti-glow-up carousel, the one nobody's posting.

Slide one: a paid bill. In your name. On time. From an account only you can see. That is the sexiest piece of paper you will ever hold.

Slide two: a quiet house. Not lonely. Quiet. The kind where the dishwasher is loaded the way you load it, and nobody has an opinion about the thermostat.

The glow-up is still a performance for an audience that does not live in your house.

Slide three: a boundary that held. You said no. They pushed. You said no again. The world did not end. You did not explain yourself in a 900-word text. You just said no.

Slide four: a new laugh. A friend you made after, who never knew the old version of you and does not need to. You laughed so hard at dinner that the waiter came over to check on you.

Slide five: self-trust. The first big decision you made alone, without asking anyone, that turned out fine. Maybe it was a car. Maybe it was a job. Maybe it was a haircut. You decided, and you were right.

None of those are glamorous. All of them are the actual transformation.

Here's what nobody says directly enough: the glow-up is a before-and-after. Real life is a during. It is messy and boring and full of small wins nobody claps for. And the women I know who truly came out the other side did not get there by looking better. They got there by living better, in ways nobody can see from the outside.

You are not a before-and-after photo. You are a whole life that is finally yours.

Post the dress if you want to. Then go home, put on sweatpants, pay a bill, and enjoy the quiet. That is the part you get to keep.

What was your unphotogenic win? The small thing that told you you were going to be fine? Tell us.
